When a new drug is approved, the drugmaker will begin rolling out a version of Viagra that has not yet been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The drug is known as Sildenafil, which will soon be available in a different formulation that will cost between $0 and $1 a pop.
The FDA said Tuesday that the new drug will be approved by Health Canada in Canada, an agency agency has asked for information about how to get Viagra without a prescription, but the agency didn’t provide details about its recommendations for how much of a drug it will cost. Pfizer said in an email that a generic version of its erectile dysfunction drug “is not in the list of drugs being marketed to Canadians, nor is it available in Canada.”The drugmaker has previously said it would not launch a generic version of Viagra until April 2011.
“We have worked closely with our Canadian partners and other regulatory agencies to ensure that generic drugs will not be marketed in Canada without the prior approval of Health Canada and that all pharmaceutical companies are aware of our obligations to Canadian drug companies,” the company said.
Viagra is one of the top five medicines in the world, with about 4,400 prescriptions in 2011. Pfizer has also made a similar move in the past, but it was only to be approved after the F. D. A. issued its final decision.
Pfizer says it has not yet issued an FDA-approved generic version of Viagra to Canadians, but it will take some time to gain a customer’s approval. It has also not yet issued a generic version of the drug.The drugmaker also plans to launch its erectile dysfunction drug, which will be sold in a different dosage form, as soon as June 2012, and in some cases, as soon as March 2012.
